Travis County Jail, Select - 14th R.S. (1874)

  • WHEREAS, The Daily Statesman in an editorial of the 6th inst.. makes statements and charges in regard to the condition of the county jail of Travis County, and the treatment of the prisoners confined therein, which, if true, are a great outrage upon the rights of persons and a disgrace to civilization.; and
    WHEREAS, Parties confined in the county jails are State prisoners, and should not be cruelly treated; therefore,

    Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Texas, the House of Representatives concurring, that a joint select committee of each House be appointed, three from each House, to inquire into the matters and things contained in said editorial relative to the county jail of Travis county, and to report thereon at as early day as practicable, recommending such legislation as may be necessary by bill or otherwise.
