- United States Navy Air Corps, World War II. "He left the University of Texas Law School to join the Navy Air Corps on January 1, 1942, and served three tours of duty in the South Pacific during World War II as a member of the Skull and Crossbones Squadron, VF-17. As a member of VBF-10, he was stationed on the carrier Intrepid and took part in the sinking of Japan’s largest battleship, the Yamato, for which he received the Silver Star."
