- Obituary, "John Matthews, Honored Colorado Citizen, Dead," 8/9/1918, p. 1. Death date 8/5/1918. "Mr. Matthews came to Texas in 1871 to the home of his father Col. Matthews, who had proceeded him from Virginia, and located on the Nelson League below Eagle Lake. In a short time Col. Matthews sent young John Back to Virginia to enter the Virginia Military Institute where he finished his education and returned to Texas . . . Some years ago, without solicitation, the friends of John Matthews elected him to the Texas legislature where he served with honesty and fidelity the people whom he represented." Colorado County Citizen (Columbus, Texas).
