- Possibly J. Swinford, Private, Sabine Pass Guards (Jefferson County), 2nd Brigade, Texas State Troops, enlisted 4/20/1861. Texas, U.S., Muster Roll Index Cards, 1838-1900. Ancestry.com.
- Came to Texas in November 1861 and located at Sabine Pass. In December 1861, enlisted in company at the Rio Grande "to help quell disturbance brought about by the Cortina invasion from Mexico"; in May 1861, volunteered for Captain Lyken's Company of Infantry, then transferred to Navy Department.
